CDR International in association with Shore Monitoring and Research defined an integral full survey campaign for the lower basin of the Msimbazi River, which was executed last February. This World Bank funded survey project serves two purposes: 1) generation of reliable, accurate and fit for purpose bathymetric & topographic data of the Msimbazi River and its floodplains for riverine flooding related detailed studies, and 2) rigorous comparison of Digital Terrain Model (DTM) generation by Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV; drones) Photogrammetry and UAV LiDAR. Traditionally LiDAR aerial acquisition methods for obtaining DTMs are done by planes. With the development of equipment, the LiDAR scanners are getting smaller and lighter, and drones can fly longer and can carry more weight, enabling to mount LiDAR scanner to drones. This potentially provides significant cost savings compared to both traditional LiDAR and field surveying methods. A meticulous comparison for the Sub-Saharan African context was however lacking. This study will recommend on when to use which surveying methods with respect to purpose, project area size, landuse/vegetation cover and challenges like import of equipment.
Preliminary insights of the analysis have been shared and presented recently at a master class at the Land and Poverty Conference 2019 – March 25-29, 2019 Washington, DC and at a workshop on DTM drone applications for Dar es Salaam stakeholders at World Bank Office in Dar es Salaam on April 11th, 2019.
CDR participated in the Economic Mission to Vietnam with Prime Minister Mark Rutte, Minister Cora van Nieuwenhuizen and Director General Marjolijn Sonnema from 7 to 12 April 2019.

The Msimbazi Opportunity Plan has been completed and has been signed by Minister of State Mr. Selemani S. Jafo of the President’s Office Regional Administration and Local Government. This is a very important next step towards implementation of the proposed interventions. CDR International is proud to have contributed to this World Bank funded innovative participatory design process as part of the Consultant’s Consortium.
Minister Kaag of Foreign Trade & Development opened the 100th PIB program (Partners for International Business).
The 100th PIB program revolves around domestic waterways in Vietnam. Dutch companies excel in the dredging of waterways and in the development of ports. Vietnam can use this knowledge and expertise well.
To meet Vietnamese demand, Dutch companies have united in a PIB program. In addition, a government-to-government program is being set up under the direction of Rijkswaterstaat (Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management). This must result in an integral policy approach for the waterway corridor at Ho Chi Minh City.
This ‘Dutch approach’ must then also be implemented in other parts of the country.

At the 1st of October 2018, Thieu Stevens (MSc.) joined the team of engineering experts of CDR International. After obtaining his Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering at the Avans University of Applied Sciences in Den Bosch, Thieu obtained his Master’s degree in Hydraulic Engineering at the Delft University of Technology. During his education, Thieu paid special attention to the design of (hydraulic) structures. He made the preliminary and detailed design for a small tunnel underneath the railway system near Assen, to obtain the Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
Thieu obtained his Master’s degree by developing a formula to predict the stability of stones in a bed protection based on the output of a Detached Eddy Simulation; including the effects of turbulence was the main challenge of his thesis, which was conducted at Deltares. In between, Thieu already gained some international experience during a multidisciplinary project about coastal protection by mangroves in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam.

As of the 13th of August 2018, Mr. Attman Kar (M.Sc.) has strengthened the engineering team of CDR International as a Coastal and Marine Engineer.
Attman has graduated from the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), the Netherlands, in 2017, after completing a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, as part of the Erasmus+ Coastal and Marine Engineering and Management (CoMEM) programme. During the programme, he undertook parts of his studies as well as various projects at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Norway, and the University of Southampton, the United Kingdom, apart from TU Delft.
During his graduate research at TU Delft, he tested the validity of two TU Delft-developed numerical models for shallow foreshores found in the low-latitude regions of the world, by comparing numerically obtained data with laboratory-obtained data, after replicating a similar foreshore in the laboratory.
Attman has wide international and engineering interests which he has shown during his education. For instance, he spent two months at the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) and studied climate change and its impact on coastal erosion, and the development of infrastructure in the fragile Arctic region. He also took part in a multidisciplinary project in the Netherlands and explored the feasibility of connecting the town of Holwerd to the Wadden Sea.

As from the 15th of February 2018, Jenny Pronker (MSc.) strengthens the team of CDR International as a River and Coastal Engineer.
Jenny graduated from Delft University of Technology in 2017 in Hydraulic Engineering with her graduation project on the Influence of Hydropower Dams on the Mekong Delta. In cooperation with Deltares she gained insights of the hydrodynamics of the delta system using a numerical model. The results of the research were presented at the Mekong River Commission conference of Sustainable Hydropower Development.
Furthermore, she did a research on Salt-intrusion and Sluicing Patterns in the North-Sea-Canal and Amsterdam-Rhine-Canal using a numerical model. Finally, she worked as a project engineer on the Punta Pacifica II project in Panama, where she performed activities regarding the Quality of the Sandfill.

BREAKWATERHEALTHSCAN® is a fresh joint initiative by CDR International, Van der Meer Consulting, DEEP and SKEYE with the aim to provide an efficient all-inclusive service product in the marine and maritime industry, viz. a thorough check on the condition of breakwaters and revetments, in particular in offshore, coastal and estuarian areas. Those can be breakwaters for port entrances, but also groynes, revetments and detached breakwater structures for coastal protection. The checks and scans will be done above and under water and the results will be presented into one actual digital geometric entity. Situations that demand the services can be in case of immediate damage repair, general rehabilitation and overhaul, upgrade for new environmental conditions, expansion of the structures, adjacent developments such as reclamations against the structure, analyses if poor construction methodologies seem to be the case and maybe some design issues.

We are proud to announce that starting august 2017 Laurens Poelhekke will be posted in Hanoi, Vietnam for CDR International through the Young Expert Programme (YEP) and in cooperation with VINWATER.
The YEP-programme (www.yepprogrammes.com) is jointly funded through the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP, www.nwp.nl ) and gives young experts the opportunity to gain experience abroad. The young experts are supported by the programme through an intensive three week training course and coaching for two years. This year the YEP-group consisted of 30 young experts from over 13 different countries. Whom together followed the three week training course focussing on personal development (through MBTI), intercultural communication, facilitation, conflict management & mediation, negation and masterclasses on the themes of water, food and the development of business cases.
Laurens Poelhekke will work closely together & share office space with VINWATER (www.vinwater.com.vn) in Hanoi. VINWATER is the Vietnam Netherlands Center for Water and Environment. Founded as the result of a long-standing relationship between Vietnam and The Netherlands, particularly the strong partnership between the Vietnam Water Resource University and the Delft University of Technology. VINWATER is a science and technology organization that aims to further facilitate the cooperation between the two countries in the Water Sector.
In posting Laurens in Hanoi, CDR is expanding its international ambitions in doing business in South East Asia. CDR aims to collaborate with national partners on the topics of Inland Waterway Transport, Port Development, Coastal Erosion, Flood Protection, Coastline Development and Protection, Inland Water Resource Management (IWRM) but also on the nexus of water and agrofood.
